Why surnames change in the 10th & 11th centuries*

  1. The Use of “Fitz” (Patronymics)
In the 10th and 11th centuries, hereditary surnames weren’t a thing yet. People used patronymics.
“Fitz” comes from the Norman French fils, meaning “son of.”
Walter FitzHerbert de la Mare simply means “Walter, son of Herbert, from the Marsh (de la Mare).”
William FitzWalter means “William, son of Walter.”
The name changed every generation because it was a description of who your father was, not a fixed family name.
  2. The Shift to “Fitz Norman”
When William Fitz Norman Coombe appears around 1030, the “Fitz Norman” part likely refers to his father being a “Norman” (or perhaps his father’s name was actually Norman). This was a common way for families who settled in England during or just before the Conquest to identify their heritage.
  3. The Transition to “de Combe” (Locative Surnames)
As the feudal system took hold, the family began using a locative surname.
“de Combe” means “of the Combe” (a combe or coombe is a narrow valley).
Once a family held a specific manor or piece of land for more than one generation, they stopped changing their name based on their father and started keeping the name of their estate.

By the time you get to Hugo de Combe (1100), the family had likely solidified their ownership of a place called Combe, and the name “stuck” to become a permanent hereditary surname.
    Summary of the Evolution:
900s to 1000s: Descriptive and Patronymic (Based on father’s name or original French origin like de la Mare).
1030s to 1070s: Transitional (Mixing patronymics like Fitz Norman with new English landholdings like Coombe).
1100s onward: Stable Locative (The family is now “The Combes,” identified by their valley estate).
